Roméo et Juliette
De Nederlandse Opera
One of the best-loved Romantic French operas, Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette is an intimate psychological drama. Although closer to Shakespeare’s tragedy than most adaptations, it also contains new elements, such as Juliette’s forced marriage to Paris and the duet scene between Juliette, who is just rousing from her apparent death, and the dying Romeo.
The production is conducted by Marc Minkowski, who was awarded the title of Chevalier du Mérite in 2004, and directed by Olivier Py, who is making his debut with DNO. Lyubov Petrova is also making her DNO debut as Juliette, while Ismael Jordi (Roméo) is returning to the company after Lucia di Lammermoor and La traviata.
Surprisingly, Gounod avoids the typically French large-scale tableaux, focusing exclusively on the personal conflict. His work is thus more psychological drama than historical narrative. Of course, the work could not be without the famous balcony scene, and its love motive recurs throughout the opera as a unifying musical element.
