Die Zauberflöte

De Nederlandse Opera

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart 1756 -1791

Eine deutsche Oper in zwei Aufzügen, KV 620
libretto: Emanuel Schikaneder

In his last opera, more than in practically any other work, Mozart combined a diversity of elements, fusing them into a unified whole. Die Zauberflöte became one of opera’s all-time triumphs: it is precisely that array of seemingly contradictory components that lends the work its unremitting freshness and actuality. The story of Pamina’s rescue from the clutches of Sarastro becomes one of the purification of Prince Tamino and his initiation into the inner circle of the Temple of Light. Gravity and frivolity are seamlessly interwoven, and philosophical tradition is entwined with a fantasy world inhabited by wondrous animals and magical musical instruments. In our own day, one so wrought with controversies, each new production must strive not to gloss over these contradictions but to highlight them.

No opera of Mozart’s has stimulated biographers’ wishful thinking in such rich measure as Die Zauberflöte. It is considered his swan song, a concluding apotheosis, a return to divine simplicity.
- Wolfgang Hildesheimer

The performance is sung in German with Dutch supertitles; the duration is about 3 hours and 30 minutes, including 1 interval.
